Congratulations to Dr. Qiong Zhang (PGY-3), winner of this year’s Pathology Resident Leadership in Research Award!

This award is intended to foster and support participation in research by resident physicians within the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. Eligible residents have a first-author abstract that has been accepted for a poster or platform presentation at the upcoming United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP) annual meeting which will take place March 22nd-27th in Boston, MA.

Qiong will be presenting her work on SPRY2, a potential biomarker in the progression of inflammatory bowel disease and IBD-induced colorectal carcinoma.  She also has two poster presentations, one regarding the impact of BRCA mutations and pathogenic germline variants on survival and therapeutic response in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma and another regarding the diagnostic performance of artificial intelligence in detecting lymph node metastasis in breast cancer. With this award, Qiong will receive $2,500 to provide additional days of attendance at the USCAP annual meeting which can also be used towards meeting workshops and classes.

Congratulations to Qiong and to all of the residents who applied this year! Many exceptional resident research abstracts were reviewed and will be presented at USCAP, which will help to showcase the exceptional research efforts taking place at every level throughout our department. We would also like to thank the award sponsor, as well as the faculty who collaborated on these projects and reviewed the submitted applications. Great work everyone!
