It is with sorrow that the Department of Pathology and Lab Medicine relays the news of the passing of Dr. Reza Hafez, Professor Emeritus, on August 11, 2024. Dr. Hafez was born in a rural village in the Khorasan province of Iran, the youngest of five children. After graduating first in his class at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences he was able to come to the US for training in pathology at UWSMPH in 1972. He and his wife Zahra stayed in Madison to raise their family. In his nearly 50-year tenure as a faculty member in our department, he became the go-to consultant across a wide range of pathology subspecialty areas with an encyclopedic knowledge, patience with trainees, and a humble kindness towards everyone in the organization. He has influenced generations of trainees and medical students at UWSMPH, leading to the creation of a departmental teaching award in his name that has been given annually for over ten years. His excellence as a diagnostician has aided in the care of countless patients over the past 50 years, and the hundreds of pathologists that he trained continue to be influenced by his wisdom in their own practices. Dr. Hafez will be dearly missed.
