Research Interests

Optimizing quality and efficiency of pathology diagnosis while containing costs.
I am interested in improving standard strategies to diagnose and monitor hematologic disorders that maintain diagnostic excellence while containing costs.

Clinical Interests

Hematopathology. Flow cytometry.

I am division chief in hematopathology. In hematopathology, we examine all bone marrows from patients treated at UW hospital. In addition we examine lymph nodes and other tissue specimens from patients with suspected hematopoietic malignancies. Morphologic interpretation is supplemented by immunohistochemistry, flow cytometric studies, cytogenetics, and/or molecular studies as appropriate for each case. We work closely with the clinicians at UW hospital, and meet with pediatric hematology-oncologists and adult hematologists on a weekly basis to review and discuss interesting cases. I also run the flow cytometry laboratory, which is responsible for immunophenotyping of bone marrows and lymph nodes as appropriate, as well as immunodeficiency testing and CD34 analysis among others.
